The Presbyterian Church of Bluefield was organized on May 24, 1889, by the Presbytery of Montgomery, Synod of Virginia, with the Princeton Presbyterian Church serving as sponsor.
At the invitation of the Methodist Episcopal Church-South, the Presbyterian Church accepted the offer to use their building until they could obtain a building of their own. The place of worship until 1891 was at the present site of the Federal Building in downtown Bluefield. The congregation then moved to a frame building on Scott Street, followed by a move to the Railroad Y.M.C.A. building and finally to the present church structure in 1912.
In 1967 a major addition to the church was completed, the educational building. The original pipe organ, installed and first used on September 1, 1912 by the M.P. Mohler Company, was replaced with another Mohler pipe organ in 1952. Five ranks of pipes were added and extensive work wan done to the instrument in 1980 In 1986, the church acquired a 5 octave set of English hand bells. In 1995 the Organ was renovated and a new three manual console was added. The third manual has no pipes but we anticipate the completion of this wonderful instrument!
On May 24, 1889 there were 26 members of First Presbyterian. By 1923 the church had grown to over 700 members. Of these members, 197 formed Westminster Presbyterian Church in Bluefield.
The name of the original church, the Presbyterian Church of Bluefield, was changed to First Presbyterian Church of Bluefield on December 9, 1923.
In its 110 year plus history, 12 pastors have faithfully served First Presbyterian and the Bluefield community.
